Chapter Thirteen

Valentine’s Day

Unconsciously thinking with one mind, Colby and Amanda spent the day preparing for their date in almost the same way. Colby spent the morning playing hockey with friends on a frozen pond in a nearby suburb. Amanda taught a class that morning at the yoga center in Cambridge. Both ate a hearty lunch at the dining hall but did not meet. That afternoon, Colby got a haircut and bought new clothes. Amanda got a professional manicure and bought a new lipstick. She already had many new clothes, which she stared at in her closet for many minutes before deciding on which to wear that evening. Both felt butterflies throughout the day, contemplating from moment to moment, how the night would climax.

In spite of the way she had tormented him, Colby couldn’t help but realize that she cared. There was no other reason on earth a girl as fine as she would consent to give him Valentine’s Day. Amanda of course had known for sometime that Colby was not only mad to possess her but also to be her man. Thus they enjoyed, the entire day, the keenest excitement and most glowing happiness imaginable, anticipating the culmination of a passion excessively postponed by early 21st century standards.

The last thing Colby did before going back to his dorm that afternoon was to stop in at the Esprit shop and buy Amanda a smoky blue cashmere polo sweater for which he took great care in choosing the most luxurious wrapping paper and cloth ribbon he could find. Leaving the shop where he had purchased the gift-wrap, Colby was hurrying back to campus when the sight of a particular billboard caught his eye and caused his heart to contract in his chest. It was a large, glass-encased ad beside the train station entrance for a dress shop called Damaris. The girl in the ad was tall, slim, blonde and bore a remarkable resemblance to Amanda. Colby went closer to stare at the ad. Not only did the girl look exactly like Amanda, she was dressed in the same short sleeved, turtle neck, ribbed sweater dress that Amanda had worn the last time they’d had a study session. If the girl in the photo ad wasn’t Amanda, then Amanda had a twin.

In spite of biting cold, Colby walked the rest of the way back to his dorm slowly, trying to digest what he had seen. When he got back to his room he took a long, hot shower and then carefully wrapped Amanda’s present, still musing, in painful confusion on the implications of his discovery about the young woman who was not yet either his girlfriend or lover, but whom he had planned to complete the seduction of that night.

Meanwhile, Amanda also took a long, hot shower and
